Rawr.Mage - Theorycrafting Mage Power

For those of you who don’t know, “Theorycrafting” is figuring out how to optimize your toon’s damage, by the numbers.  It’s basically a bunch of geeky math that uses known formulas from Blizzard, and some derived calculations to determine the max possible damage.

WoW is so complex that a ton of variables influence the amount of damage.  Simple things like the duration of the fight, your spec, etc., and more subtle things like the presence of a Shadow Priest in your group, and what type of buffs are on you during a fight, all come together to determine what kind of damage per second (DPS) you can do.
Theorycrafting is the THEORETICAL max damage.  Remember that it’s different than a simulation or real data.  For example, the actual damage for various fights can be different depending on how much movement you are doing, etc.
But Theorycrafting (TC for short), is probably one of the best ways to answer fundamental questions about your toon.  After all, your ‘toon’ really is just a piece of software that follows the calculated rules setup by Blizzard.
Enter RAWR.

Rawr is a program that lets you customize the details (your gear, spec, presence of buffs, etc.), and graphs out the type of damage you can do.  You can tweak it and play with it to see how one factor influences another.

Understanding the information, TC, and results that RAWR has to offer differentiates between someone who is an ‘OK mage, and someone who could become really expert at a mage.  Knowing the subtle ins and outs of a toon’s abilities and the influence of factors around it is the hallmark of the really great mages.
